Paolo Maria Deanesi Gallery è lieta di annunciare una nuova mostra personale di Diango Hernández(Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, 1970, vive e lavora a Düsseldorf), la quarta nella galleria trentina dopo Revantgarde (2005), Power Pencil (2006) e Messaggio inviato (2021), la prima interamente dedicata al genere del ritratto. Il presente progetto, intitolato Crazy, presenta infatti una quindicina di opere inedite tra disegni e dipinti dove l’artista di origine cubane applica l’Olaismo – il suo movimento e stile riconoscibile – a volti di persone.
I ritratti che ne risultano sono destabilizzati e destabilizzanti. Le fattezze degli individui sono spinti al loro limite di rottura, estremamente deformate dai tracciati curvilinei del pennello, fanno pensare a personalità sulla soglia della sparizione o aperte alla complessità del mondo circostante. Sono volti di squilibrati? Il titolo della mostra sembrerebbe suggerire questo, anche se, probabilmente, la pazzia e l’azzardo di queste opere risiedono più nella modalità con cui l’autore le ha approcciate, nella volontà non solo di restituire i suoi soggetti ma di farne anche qualcos’altro. Anch’essi diventano testimoni della forza caraibica dell’onda, sono un po’ meno persone e un po’ più energia universale.
Nuovamente, Hernández mostra la capacità dei grandi creativi di riconoscere elementi che già esistono nel reale – come le onde – per appropriarsene e renderli identificativi del proprio operato. Attraverso essi c’è il tentativo radicale di trasformare la realtà che ci circonda. C’è dell’eroismo in tutto ciò – prendere una sola cosa e farne il proprio simbolo d’elezione – ma il risultato è appagante: Diango Hernández è diventato “l’artista delle onde”.
Diango Hernández, nato a Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, 1970. Diplomato all’Istituto Superiore di Design dell’Avana, Miami, FL, 1994. Vive e lavora tra Düsseldorf e L’Avana, Cuba. Diango Hernández ha iniziato la sua pratica artistica a Cuba nel 1994 come cofondatore di Ordo Amoris Cabinet, un gruppo di artisti e designer che si concentrava su soluzioni inventate per oggetti di design per la casa, per compensare la permanente carenza di materiali e beni.

Paolo Maria Deanesi Gallery is pleased to announce a new solo exhibition by Diango Hernández (Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, 1970, lives and works in Düsseldorf), the fourth in the Trentino gallery after Revantgarde (2005), Power Pencil (2006) and Messaggio inviato (2021), the first entirely dedicated to the portrait genre. In fact, the present project, titled Crazy, presents some 15 previously unseen works including drawings and paintings where the Cuban-born artist applies Olaismo-his recognizable movement and style-to people’s faces.
The resulting portraits are destabilizing and destabilizing. The individuals’ features are pushed to their breaking point, extremely deformed by the curvilinear brush strokes, hinting at personalities on the threshold of disappearance or open to the complexity of the world around them. Are they faces of the deranged? The title of the exhibition would seem to suggest so, although, arguably, the madness and daring of these works lie more in the way the author approached them, in his willingness not only to return his subjects but also to make something else out of them. They too become witnesses to the Caribbean force of the wave; they are a little less people and a little more universal energy.
Once again, Hernández shows the ability of great creatives to recognize elements that already exist in reality-such as waves-to appropriate them and make them identifiable in their work. Through them is the radical attempt to transform the reality around us. There is heroism in this – taking a single thing and making it one’s symbol of choice – but the result is fulfilling: Diango Hernández has become “the artist of the waves”.
Diango Hernández, born in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, 1970. Degree at Havana Superior Institute of Design, Miami, FL, 1994. Lives and works between Düsseldorf and Havana, Cuba. Diango Hernández began his artistic practice in Cuba in 1994 as a co-founder of Ordo Amoris Cabinet, a group of artists and designers who focused on invented solutions for home design objects to compensate for a permanent shortage of materials and goods.
