Ventanas / Windows will be Diango Hernández’s eighth solo exhibition at Wizard Gallery in Milan. This new presentation by the acclaimed Cuban-born artist, who has lived in Europe since 2003, will bring together recent works on canvas and, for the first time, a series of sculptures made from Carrara marble.
The exhibition will also mark the inauguration of Wizard’s new space in Milan: a completely renovated venue featuring a large exhibition hall, offices and an extraordinary courtyard.
The exhibition takes its title from the Window series, which Hernández has developed over the past five years. Its point of departure is the stairwell window of the building in Düsseldorf where he lives, observed from inside his apartment through the corrugated glass of the door. By looking at and studying a scene through a surface that alters it, Hernández transforms images into rich fields of fluid textures, fragmenting reality and opening new possibilities for its interpretation.
This investigation has allowed Hernández to deepen his exploration of Olaismo, the artistic concept he began developing in 2015. Olaismo takes the wave as the essential unit of a visual language: a form that can be repeated, connected and transformed until it constructs images, symbols and words. Like a liquid alphabet, its undulating lines do more than represent the movement of water; they propose another way of writing, reading and perceiving the world. Reality passes through these waves and reappears transformed, suspended between memory, imagination and present experience.
Structured around a large-scale Olaista painting entitled Ventana y lectora / Window and Reader, the exhibition invites viewers to gain a deeper understanding of the origins of this language. Within Olaismo, the written word, its interpretation and the act of reading itself are intrinsic parts of the concept. In the central work, a young woman reads quietly on her bed, while the scene appears to reach us through rippled glass or as though viewed beneath the surface of water.
The painting will be accompanied by a series of Carrara marble sculptures in which different words, “translated” into the language of Olaismo, acquire a physical presence. Transformed into fluid, precise and seemingly perfect forms, these words leave the written surface behind to occupy space. Painting, sculpture, writing and reading thus converge in an exhibition in which the window is no longer merely an architectural element but becomes a threshold: a place from which to observe reality as it transforms.
